One of the smallest countries in Europe and the world, with a population of under half a million, Luxembourg still maintains a beautiful culture and excellent standard of living for its citizens. The government operates under a parliamentary system with a monarchy, ruled by the Grand Duke. The country has three official languages: German, French and Luxembourgish, a local dialect. Luxembourg’s history began with Seigfried, Count of Ardennes acquiring the Luxembourg Castle in 963, after which the town developed. The area has been occupied by many different rulers throughout history, including Spain and the Netherlands, but Luxembourg became autonomous in the mid- 19th century.
As a city that was named the European Capital of Culture twice, Luxembourg offers exceptional museums and traditions that any backpacker can enjoy.
