Guide to Europe  >> Greece
Greece

At the end of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe lies Greece, the cradle of democracy and western civilization and philosophy.  From Greece we receive wonderful mythological stories of Zeus and the gods on Mount Olympus; we learn of heroism and battle from the Athenians and Spartans, and we benefit from their innovative architecture.  But while the country offers the treasures of ancient Greece to its visitors, it also holds many more attractions.

Athens and Olympia both comprise of an abundance of ancient Greek culture, from the Acropolis to the site of the Olympic games. Thessaloniki holds many beautiful Byzantine churches, remnants of the Ottoman Empire, and Aristotle University, while the islands of Mykonos attract some of the rowdiest crowds in Europe, who enjoy drunken revelry on the beaches at every hour of the day.  Greece definitely packs a punch, and its remarkable history and vibrant people make it wonderful place to visit.
